There is a fairly interesting article in Rolling Stone, The Death of High Fidelity, which is full of plenty of "well, duh, we knew that" stuff, but includes some good examples of differences in dynamics between recordings.

We keep hearing about this, but what I really want is a proper demonstration. Sure, I can hear the limitations of a 128kbps Mp3, but I try to keep to 192k as a minimum and I struggle to hear differences then. 256k Mp3s still sound great through my JPWs.
I'd like some guru to recommend a particular track to listen to - preferably one on a common CD - and then I could do a proper sound test. I suspect that my nearly-40-yr-old ears might struggle!
Fair point, high bit rate MP3 files are good. But when I read the article what interested me most was the stuff about the dynamic ranges. There weren't many examples, but I found the comparison of two versions of With of Without You interesting. What I'd really like to see is comparison between the original and remastered versions of the Elvis and Led Zep stuff the article mentioned, and to have a listen to the different versions.
